OSX 10.5.8, CS4 - I run into broken InDesign links again and again.
According to InDesign it is a lack of obviously mixed-up server volume
names: They appear to get mounted multiple, with additional numbers, like:
"volumename", "volumename-1", volumename-2" etc.
Actually each of the volume names in our network is unique indeed. So, where
do the weird "-1" etc come from, that make InDesign missing links from one
to the other day?
Two screenshots of a mac clients volume view (350 kb):
http://osk.powercontrolcenter.de/getFile.php?id=82eca152
Any occurence of "<number>" in this screenshots volume names has no real
corresponding volume, excluded the version without/before "-<number>" only.
For instance: "ARCHIV" is an existing volume name, whereas "ARCHIV-1" or
"Archiv-1" does not exist.
Any hints to solve this issue?
Thank you,
- thomas

Yes, each single volume name is unique, and none of the volume names does
end with ³ - <number>².
> Not sure what the German localization for /Volumes would be
Concerning OSX Terminal: /Volume is /Volume. Otherwise: Volumen.

See "Duplicate mount point in /Volumes after unexpected restart"
<http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2474>
There has been some discussion attributing Adobe Air as a possible contributing factor. But the above KB article should help you fix the issue (until it happens again).

Weird but true: as soon I realize this issue it is one of InDesign only,
none of the OSX finder any more, because my computer gets auto-restarted
every night.
So, thanks for this Apple KB link - but it appearently does not fit (fix)
the issue. I need to prevent such "Duplicate mount points" before they
occure, not to delete them afterwards.

We have that problem at work when the server intermittently goes down
and then up again and a document is open. Lack of consistent
connection with other words. Links then get broken yes. You have to
relink again to get the links right. There was as far as I remember
also some Terminal trick to get rid of the wrongly named server
partions but I am no Terminal-user (unless I can copy and paste) I
cannot help you with that.

Thanks Nini, at least I am not alone with this issue ;-)
"Duplicate mount point in /Volumes after unexpected restart"

Obviously Apple is aware of the problem but doesn't offer a solution yet to
prevent the renaming. So I wonder why the problem is not much more spreaded?

It is not more wide-spread because servers are NOT supposed to restart unexpectedly!
We had a lame IT guy 6 years ago and our server did go down quite often, several times a week!
But when that happened, we would save to our desktops and restart our Macs.
When the server came back up all was fine and we copied our files back to the server, the links relinked.
But then we got a primo IT guy, and now the server goes down only a few times a year.
And we always get warning and shut down our Macs first, or at least close documents.
In any event it is not a good idea to keep on working after a server restart without rebooting or logging in and out of your client Mac.
Save often, and if you can't save to your desktop after a server failure, just close the doc and loose few minutes of changes..
So hopefully most are not experiencing this because if the server is properly maintained, it won't happen.

We had this in the U2U forums a while ago:
http://forums.adobe.com/message/2450041
When OSX mounts a volume and finds the /Volumes entry already used, it
will just append the incrementing number until a free name is found.
One reason can be if you use fast user switching, and mount the same
volume twice for different users. This should be solved after reboot,
of course now breaking documents with links to /Volumes/Archive-1/...
Another possible reason is a folder in the /Volumes directory. Some
programs have routines that will create a whole path when they find
folders in between missing, rather than give up. This is often used to
create the deeply nested folder hierarchies for preferences. In
Finder, press Cmd+Shift+G, then type /Volumes . You'll see the
otherwise hidden Volumes directory, and eventually the bad folder.
Have a look at its contents, you may tell the culprit from the files
deeper in that folder. Then move the folder somewhere else.

Thanks Dirk, it reads interesting, I fwd your hints to our IT.

I did a test to see if Ninis note would do any harm. Fortunately the restart
of a network volume had no effect, neither to InDesign links nor to the
mounted /Volumes (Volume names).
But unfortunately I run into two new, never seen before issues: One JPG
could not be placed, InDesign said it would be "in use on a network volume"..
From another volume I could not place any JPG, InDesign said the "Volume for
(null) could not be found".
Here's a link to a screenshot collection (1.5 MB PDF):
http://osk.powercontrolcenter.de/getFile.php?id=aa7eb215
Has one of you ever seen such errors? Any more hints?
Thank you again,
- thomas
