When I open Quark (4.3 from memory) files in ID 5 (aka CS3), ID has
trouble with a number of characters and spaces. Rather than translate
them in some useful way, it replaces them with a completely bone-
headed "?". One then has to search for all question marks and alter
them to what they should be -- which is not always obvious -- while
leaving real question marks alone.
Opening the files in Quark not being an option for me, is there any
way round this problem?

Why can't you open the files in Quark?
If you could, exporting the text to RTF
and importing it to ID might work, if
there weren?t too many stories. And if
your Quark is too old for your current
machine, maybe you can pick up an old one
somewhere in your neighborhood for twenty
dollars ?or maybe even for free if someone
wants to get rid of it and can't sell it?
and use it.
I hope you get a better answer than that. ?-}

There was a bug, IIRC, in earlier versions that was fixed. Check with
Markzware.

Sorry, I didn't realise that Q2ID was a product name so was not
referring to Markzware. I'm not too keen on paying them $199 for
something that ID claims to do, but does in such a slapdash fashion.
Does CS4 behave in the same way as CS3 when it opens a Quark file?
Probably... Adobe seems to a founder member of the Bug Preservation
Society.

One other thing...if they are Quark 4 files, I think if you hold the shift
key down when opening the file, it will override Q2ID and allow ID to open
the file on its own. That will tell you if it's an ID or Q2ID problem.

IME, Q2ID does a better job, but I should add that I haven't seen a Quark 4
file in quite some time so there's really no way to test it.
And I'll say it again...Q2ID is the bet $199 you could possibly spend if you
have to work with Quark files.

Hello,
InDesign's built in conversion tool will only handle v3 to v4.11 of
Quark documents. From v5 onward right up to 8, Quark has a heavy
encryption. Markzware's Q2ID can indeed convert, with one click, all
versions of QuarkXPress into Adobe InDesign CS3 or CS4, even v5-8.
Yes, it does costs 199, but that is a small price to pay if you have a
very large Quark Project or many files. I recommend viewing some of
these real-life video testimonials here:
http://www.youtube.com/user/markzwareTV#grid/user/79E686427DCF51A8
Q2ID also generally does a better job of conversion than that Adobe's
built-in tool for older versions as well.
