I must amend some of my description...looking at a bit more of the
file, I find that some paragraph styles are applied to text, but most
with local overrides. Perhaps the much admired originator of the
files was not as pristine as expected. But I would like a short
explanation of what to expect from the Q to ID conversion process
with respect para and char styles.
thanks again,
Mary

In short...garbage in, garbage out.

That's not unexpected in my limited experience. Hover your cursor
over the style name and temporarily edit the style to match the
override. Once that's done, the override will go away and you can re-
edit the style (if the change you made requires that).
I imagine you'd want to make other edits to the styles at some point.

Even easier is to simply right click the style in question and choose
redefine style.

I'm not sure what Mary is referring to, but when applying paragraph
styles, it depends on what's selected. If the whole paragraph or just
an insertion point is selected, all paragraph style attributes are
applied. If there is some text selected, only the selected text gets
the character level paragraph style properties. The character level
properties on the rest of the text remains as it was -- overridden.

True, but there's a reasonably good chance that the overrides aren't
desired (or desirable), so some actual editing may still be necessary.

Stupid question probably, but would the corresponding version of
Indesign(going by release dates) to Quark do a better or worse job of
conversion. I'm wondering if the Quark files are from an old version?

It's not a stupid question but at the risk of getting repetitious, the
answer is the same...garbage in, garbage out. I've used Q2ID to convert
Quark 7 files to ID CS3 and the translation is terrific. I've only seen one
Quark 8 file and I used the demo to downsave it to seven. Then new version
of Q2ID is compatible with Quark 8 and InDesign CS4.
For anyone needing to convert Quark files, this is an essential tool and
contrary to some of the comments I've seen, well worth every dime.
