Hi everyone,
I've created a small extension to build site maps to the new Google
site map specification. Fred Light mentioned this new spec on this
list the other day:
https://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/docs/en/about.html
At present the extension only works in GoLive CS2 but when I have
time I'll make sure it works in GoLive CS as well. I may even be able
to get it working in GoLive 6 but I'm not sure yet.
You can download it here:
http://menumachine.com/quickies/GoogleSitemaps.zip
To install it you need to decompress the archive and then drag the
folder to your GoLive/Modules/Extend Scripts/ folder.
When you relaunch GoLive you will see a new Google Site Maps palette
under the Window menu. This allows you to select the files you want
to include in the site map and also their relative priorities (1 is
high, 0 is low) and the update frequencies of the pages you select.
You can apply the settings to multiple files and folders at once.
When you're ready to generate the site map you must enter the root
URL of your web site and then click the "Generate Site Map" button.
That's it.
I recommend you read the Google URL above to get a feel for what
Google is looking for in a site map.
Although the extension should be stable it is still in a beta state,
so all feedback is appreciated.
When I have the CS version working too then I'll post this to the
Adobe Xchange.

Hi Rob,
Great job, indeed! It works perfectly for me.
One question nevertheless: what about dynamic sites? With your
extension, we can create Google sitemap in local mode, so that a php
page like something.php can be included in the sitemap, but not
something.php?id=1, something.php?id=2, etc., if they exist...
So is it a good idea to insert a Google sitemap if it doesn't contain
*all* the dynamic pages of your site?
Thanks for your answer

I'd say it's a better idea to include all the pages in the sitemap
that you want Google to access. If this includes dynamic pages, I'd
recommend that they be included too.
Of course, the extension won't do that. Google does supply some
server-side code which you could use or modify to do it, however.

Hi Rob:
Can you explain what you extension does do and what it doesn't. For example
if one has a windows server, does this work? I understand you have to be
running a program called Python and this only runs on Unix.
There seems to be other things as well that are required in order for this
to work. I am not a programmer and it doesn't seem that straight forward.

And you need to do this each time the site changes? Seems like
something that ideally should be built into the site upload process.
Can Google sitemaps be made to do double duty as the text-only
sitemap for a site? That'd be nice.

I can do that but only for GoLive CS2.

Not easily, since there is nothing stored in the file except a URL.
You could write a server-side parser for them but even so you're
better off with a manually-created site map.

You don't need to do anything on the server side. Google has a new
feature where it will look for a file called sitemap.xml in the root
of your site. If it finds this file (and if it conforms to their
specification) then Google will use the information in the file to
help it index the site in a way that is the most logical from your
point of view.
The extension allows you to easily build this sitemap.xml file
automatically. Basically, you choose which pages to include in the
site map and specify how often on average they change. You also
specify how important each page is relative to the rest of your
content. So, for instance, your index page might be given a priority
of 1, while your "about us" page might only have a priority of 0.3.
The extension then uses the settings you specify to create a site map
file.

Sweet Rob! Thank you
I don't really understand what it is that google wants now but... I' m
sure that I'll figure it out...especially because of your extension.
Thanks again

Beside the "Google Priority" column in the site view, does the
Extension also add the "Alternates" column? I'm asking because I've
never before perceived that one, and I now can't hide it. Ah, that
seems to be a Version Cue feature...Oh, and "Change Frequency" is also
new?
Is it by design, that the Extension adds the new columns in front of
the others (esp. before Name)?
(I'm just a bit confused, because after adding the Extension the site
view of a just opened site looks suddently completely different)

The extension adds two columns to the site window, "Google Priority"
and "Change Frequency". This is to allow you to easily see these
settings for multiple files.

It shouldn't add them before the Name column, AFAIK. I haven't
specified a location for them so they should appear in a "default"
location. For me they appear after the Status column (but I am using
Version Cue on most sites).
> (I'm just a bit confused, because after adding the Extension the

I should probably add some settings so that you can choose whether or
not to show the columns and if so where to put them.

Excellent for an overview when working with the Extension!
> It shouldn't add them before the Name column, AFAIK.
I wonder how that happened. Actually, all the columns of that site
where pretty confused. Either a temporary glitch, or a problem with the
site.

Whatever GoLive thinks the default is. Maybe that's the point: Could be
it messed up "default" for that particular site.

Well, I have switched Status off on most sites.
Could it be that GL inserts the new columns at strange places if the
"place-after-default" column is hidden? That could explain what I was
seeing. Need to check.

Probably, it would be nice to have that. I'd prefer to not see those
columns in every site, regardless whether I've used the Extension or
not.
