I may have stuck my foot in it myself, so, if so, silly me!
Back when the iPad was released I was musing with a code developer about possibilities of an actual FMinc application on the both iPhone/iPad platforms and the comment was made the technology for the platforms was the same and difference was more in scaling and perhaps some horsepower processing performance.
In light of the fact that I have some apps, and database apps at that, that download and run on both platforms, I of course shot my mouth off to several clients in promoting the platforms and software.
Now I have a couple of clients who are asking what is the difference between iPhone/iPad Filemaker software, other than scale and perhaps performance, that warrants double the price or even any second platform price at all.
I have read the FM Go white paper and release notes and have not detected any significant differences to relate back to my clients.
Does anyone know of any specific differences in the capabilities in FM Go between the iPhone/iPad platforms that speaks to the price difference?
TIA

The iPad version doesn't require you to totally redesign _all_ your layouts!
_That's_ gotta be worth an extra twenty bucks, right?

Thanks, Jonathan... I'll run that by my clients... they may like that!
I point out, however, that is due more to the device than the software ;-)
Point being I have clients who started out with 640x480 resolution and now they use upwards of 1400xsomething monitors and have been very appreciative of the genius of Nashoba design providing the zoom widget without FM charging extra for the ability. Can you imagine doubling the price for each zoom increment, great gig if you could get it ;-p
Just to clarify, I have heard ideas of the iOS technology being scaled up to large wall size units with tabloid, desk, table, and other sized models in between. Does it seem reasonable to scale up the price for each of these form factors?

Hmmm...
Digitel, if you scale up from iphone to wall, you are going to end up with icons the size of picture frames...
Surely this is not a question of simple scaling? And even if it were, it would mean that everything on your layout would have to be some kind of vector graphic so it would scale nicely.
The point, though, is that you've got room on an iphone screen for about two buttons, while on a wall you could have hundreds. Plus of course the difference between mouse/trackpad and touchscreen, though this may be of less importance in future.
I think you are always going to have to design differently for different screen sizes. On the other hand, I'm not sure I see a reason that the apps should have different prices for different sizes. Probably that's just marketing...

My response was just a little bit tongue-in-cheek. The two programs are likely nearly identical, code-wise. For instance, if the iPad ever gets phone capability, I'll bet that the Dial Phone script step will instantly just work on the iPad as well.
I'm with Steve: it's just marketing. The perceived value--and indeed the usefulness--is greater on the iPad, so they feel like they can charge more. IMHO.
That said, however, a thin client for $40? Wow! Haven't we been asking for something like that for decades? I'm just tickled that it's not $99!!!

Now, if the 'dial phone' script step could dial through another app installed on your iPad, such as Skype, that would be brilliant...

I think the feature request would not go to FileMaker, Inc. But rather to the VOIP app manufacturers. The problem would be though how to choose which app to send the request to (although, at this point I have none). I do not see this whole thing very unlikely, though, especially with the multitasking on iPad coming up.

On FileMaker Pro I use the webviewer to dial a phonenumber (skype) -
didn't go into too much detail yet on FM GO specs but surely worth a
try, ..

For FM I made a plug-in to dial through Skype, but, of course, plug-in cannot be used on FM Go.

I understand but you can get FM Pro to dial Skype merely by using a
simple web viewer an script, ..
simply set a field (global) to a specific value,
something like this, ..
Let([tel=Filter(AdrCom::contact;"0123456789+")];
"callto:"&tel)
this field is displayed in web viewer window (1px by 1px)
this should trigger yr Skype app
tested on windows computers using fm 9, 10 and 11)

Nice touch on that one, infortica.
I was using the callto function with Skype for a long time, but always in connection with Applescript. Now, Applescript not being supported on iPad will become an issue for that solution to work. You way is more elegant. Good one.

My plug-In, aside from dialing out, shows Skype user status, as well as receives incoming calls in FileMaker. It is still in beta though. :-)

do you have a beta testers, and if you don't, I would like to try it, and see what and how different it is from what I am using.

You know you can get a copy. :-) But it is not for distribution, please don't share it with anyone. I have no documentation yet, so I gotta show you how to set it up. Plus it hasn't been tested on FM 11 yet.
Chat me later and we can arrange things. :-)
Oh and what are you using now?

I will

FM11A, but my solution was working on old eMacs and iMacs with OS10.4 and FM10 with Applescript and earlier version of Skype (not the recent one, since it was not compatible with the OS). The reason, we got 20 comps for phonebanking and a lot of them were used comps, some office wanted to throw away.We maxed the memory, and OS, and voila, FM10, Applescript, Skype, and we got phonebanking in function, with almost no cost (except for Skype credits, and electricity, of course). Volunteers were/are doing the phonebanking, lol.
